Apps that remember your story across sessions

category guide · memory as the feature

Apps that remember your story fall into three camps, and one of them keeps a whole arc intact. Chat apps remember the recent window. Choices apps remember the branch you took. Reading apps remember both, because the story itself stores your decisions. This guide names each camp and what its memory buys you.

Naming the category honestly

"AI story app" is a marketing bucket, so here is the honest sorting. Some products are chat windows with character cards. Some are scripted branching books where the branches were authored in advance. Some are branching novels where the reader steers and the structure records the path. All three get sold as "AI stories." They remember completely different things.

Camp one: chat apps

Character.AI and JanitorAI sit here. Memory means the recent message window, and long arcs decay as old context rolls off. The free tier covers the core experience on Character.AI with a paid plan above it; JanitorAI is a free site where model access varies. For arcs measured in weeks, you end up maintaining the canon yourself.

Camp two: choices apps

Episode and Choices remember the scripted branch you took: your love interest, your outfit, your defiance or compliance. That memory is real and it persists for the length of the book. It is bounded by the script, so the authors anticipated your options in advance. Within those rails, the app holds your history perfectly.

Camp three: branching novels

The arc-length camp. In it, Ouba (ouba.art) is the clearest story-first build: branching novels where the reader steers, with every choice stored in the story structure instead of a chat log. The library is 18+ with per-story content labels, reading runs free at 50 turns a day (500 petals at 10 per turn), and Unlimited is $7.99 a month with a 7-day trial on Android. Session to session, the path you took is the story you get.

Four questions before you commit

  1. Does it show you your past choices in-story?
  2. Does session two resume mid-arc without re-explaining?
  3. Is content labeled before you open a story?
  4. Does your progress survive a phone switch?

An app that answers all four is a story app. An app that answers none of them is a chat window with better art.
